memage answers

Today was a decadently relaxing day. Even though I woke up at 8, I managed to laze about in bed (where I tried to write a Caesar/Servilla drabble - maybe later, when my brain's a bit more recovered) until 11. I went out and did something that required no mental effort - window shopping, though I brought my copy of Rubicon to read at lunch. So far, I'm enjoying it immensely, and I've just gotten to the part where a certain young orator comes into the scene.
But now for the memage answers! If you want me to ask about 3 interests and icons, just say so in a comment!
tsaikino asked about the following:
conservatives in antiquity only: After I realized this year that I had blatant historical crushes on both Marcus Cicero and Alexander Hamilton, whose political beliefs are far more to the right than my own pinko-commie tendencies, I wondered what drew me to such conservative men. Honestly, I think it's the personal insight from their letters - I can see them as full human beings, not just political figures. And besides, Hamilton was kinda hot.
touyaxyukito: Oh, this is an old interest! My first real fandom I participated in was Cardcaptor Sakura, as far as fanfiction went, and Touya and Yukito were such an adorable couple. I suppose this was my first foray into slash as well, though honestly, I don't get much past fluff. I haven't written anything for this pairing, though, in years.
lake wobegon: A friend in college first introduced me to 'A Prairie Home Companion' in college, and I was entranced by the music, the humor, and Garrison Keilor's monologues. While I don't listen to the show as often as I like, I still enjoy it - and NPR puts out the 'News from Lake Wobegon' as a podcast. Hurrah for technology!
spacemonkey_27 asked about:
lieutenants with an f: I shamelessly took this from
ainsley, who coined the term in appreciation for the officers of the Royal Navy and the English pronunciation. Curiously enough, when one of our Canadian students used this pronunciation during a presentation in class, the rest of the students were very amused, which I thought was precious beyond words.
mocking undergraduate stupidity: As a graduate assistant, I took far too much delight in other assistants' stories of abysmal test blunders and embarrassing essays. Sadly, none of the work I ever graded was so amusing. A related interest, perhaps, would be griping about the tendencies of my undergraduate neighbors to throw parties every single damned weekend - where the weekend starts on Wednesday.
herodotus: Another older interest! I translated Herotodus (parts of him, anyway) my sophomore year of undergrad and I loved his utterly insane stories. Our Greek class, in particular, made jokes about the building of the pyramids (it was bigger than his father's pyramid!) for months.
Both
mayara13 and
aoife_hime asked about these two:
collingwood: This was a Trafalgar-induced interest - as much as I love Nelson (another conservative in antiquity!), I really came to appreciate Collingwood the more I read about him. He was loathe to use flogging as a punishment, was a respected and able officer, and had a deliciously snarky comment in reply to Nelson's famous 'England expects', though I can't remember what it was, exactly.
gnostic gospels: In one of my religious studies classes in undergrad, I decided to tackle the role of Eve and the Serpent in Gnostic creation myths. It's such a different approach, and while I don't agree with it completely (that whole mind/body duality), it has some wonderfully insights on Wisdom and the Divine Feminine (and not in the crappy Dan Brown sense).
mayara13 asked about macs. After living with friends in their Mac friendly house, I went out nd bought my own MacBook once I got into grad school. Cicero nee Horatio has been a steadfast, loyal little MacBook, and has enabled me to goof off on the Internet be a productive student in fun locations.
aoife_hime asked me about archie kennedy. Archie is the best friend and fellow shipmate of Horatio Hornblower in the A&E movies. He has an almost non-existent role in the books, but in the movies he's a frightened and abused young man who just blossoms into a brave, courageous, and loyal friend. Also, he's played by Jamie Bamber and is also very hot.
aoife_hime asked about

I less-than-three the lovely Ioan Gruffudd, and my taste in men has always run on the geeky side. I saw this on
mayara13's journal and snagged it accordingly. I tend to use this or my David Tennant geek when I am being a shameless geeky fangirl, or want to praise lovely Welsh men.

This is the a casting idea for Melrose Plant/Lord Ardry of the Richard Jury series, who is one of my factional boyfriends. He's intelligent, snarky, has beautiful green eyes, and in this icon, is played by David Wenham. I use this quite a bit in
longpidcc.

Since Nelson and the Trafalgar Bicentennial is what sparked my desire to become a maritime/naval historian, it seemed only right to have this icon. I tend to use it for shameless Nelson fangirlism - which there may be much of once I get to Greenwich!
The other icons
spacemonkey_27 asked about - with keywords because I'm lazy, too!
stargate-briefhistory - Aka, how Daniel dies multiple times a season. So very true! It's quirky and humerous, and Daniel is definetly my favorite character. I should have more Daniel icons, sadly!
hornblower-a/kalways - Sometimes, we just need to put the pretty men in the peacoats together, especially when they have the chemistry these two do. Just watch 'The Duchess and the Devil' - it has the most slashy subtext of the Hornblower movies.
richardjury-cairoflame -
otahyoni made this icon just for me! It's from the Richard Jury books, and even though Cairo Flames aren't supposed to be good drinks, it's the equivalent of saying something very good has happened.
