After a very frantic night and early morning of packing on the 3rd/4th (yay for two hours of sleep) I'm home at last! The train trip was just *amazing*, and if I scan the pictures I'll do my best to post them. My dad and I are chatting about doing a very long train trip from California to Seattle, then to Chicago, and back, through Denver, to California. After this trip, if I have the chance to take a train anywhere, I certainly will. It's the way to go!

So today is unpacking and vegetating - yay. :) Tomorrow I may head to the mall to get my sister a graduation gift - I'm thinking a big gift card or cash would be good. Something practical, you know.

Congratulations on discovering "the train." Sad that our leaders constantly rob money from what could be a thriving railroad infrastructure to prop up a failing airline industry. Ride while you can.

My family and I have made the trip between Seattle and Los Angeles on the Coast Starlight a couple times. It was great fun to make the trip on New Year's Eve. We've also done Seattle to Chicago a couple times on the Empire Builder. Even patching in Chicago to New York and a couple up and down the metro corridor on the east coast. My first trip (1966) was on the California Zephyr from Denver to Chicago. The trip I'd love to take is the City of New Orleans from Chicago to New Orleans.

If you haven't experienced it yet, spend the extra bucks to book first class on the long trips. You get your sleeper and all your meals, a wine-tasting party, movies in the lounge, and a concierge who can tell you everything about every mile of the track from one point to the next if you ask. Enjoy!

Oh, I love the train! I took the Empire Builder to Seattle from Chicago a few years ago, also the train from Salt Lake to Sacramento. It's just wonderful. Next up, I want to ride from Toronto out to Lake Louise. I hope you have some terrific train trips ahead of you!

I would love to take a train trip like that, but I don't even know where to start looking up information. Hints?

Glad you arrived safely, and I hope you enjoy your time with your family. :)

We just asked the agent at the train station while we were waiting - evidently, if you don't mind going coach, they have a deal for 450-some dollars where you can do around three trains with two layovers. It's called the All Around America fare, I think. Hope that bit of vagueness was helpful - if I find out more I'll let you know!
