#1 - it's a musical. M&C and Red October aren't musicals, so that's a fair complaint. But you're not allowed to point out that everyone's a suspiciously good singer in a musical, unless you're willing to also point out the absurdity of everyone being a good dancer and breaking out into song at random moments. You can't start thinking about it or the whole musical world will fall apart!!! What will become of the Sharks and the Jets if they can't be a choreographed menace on the streets?
(You know, when I was a little kid I thought the nuns actually had a choir singing "How do you solve a problem like Maria" during her wedding, and I thought that was rather unkind of them.)
The singing in Red October really is beautiful. :D
But actually, the M&C singing sounds pretty reasonable. In any large gathering of random people heartily singing (like at church), usually the good singers drown out the bad ones. And usually the bad ones do KNOW that they're bad, and don't sing as loud.
Of course, it IS impressive that they're all able to stay perfectly on pitch throughout, without sliding down down, down flat flat flat like people casually singing acapella usually do.
