shake rattle and roll

While indulging my insomnia and watching BSG, I felt an earthquake! It might sound crazy, but as a native Californian, I actually miss the ground moving under my feet every now and then. Also, two years of being a geology major still makes me go earthquakes=yay versus earthquakes=freak out.

*pats the fabulous earth*

But the USGS has this nifty feedback feature, and 1900+ people have already reported feeling the quake - certain questions tell you what intensity you perceived, versus what intensity it was. This was only a 4.5, and we're over 30 miles from the epicenter, so this was just a light little shake. I don't even think it woke my Nana up.

Ah geology! That was my major.

The big quake we had last year caused a power outage here on Oahu.

The volcanic activity on the Big Island has increased lately. Some awesome pics and footage here:

A geologist and a naval historian! That is such an awesome combination.

My mom may be taking me to Hawaii (Oahu specifically) for a M.A. graduation gift, so we might have to meet up! I'd love to make it to the Big Island, for the volcanism, and to Kauai, for the sheer beauty of it.

Alas, I'm not a geologist now...was going to go for a masters (at the very least)...took the GREs, got applications together, but then found that the thought of more lab work and writing papers wasn't too appealling. I morphed into a graphic designer instead. I still have my specimen collection, hammer and hand lens though. :D

Let me know when the time comes, if you want to meet up. It would be good to try to make it to one of the other islands. If you're here during the summer, the Lynx (schooner) may be back and you could do an inter-island cruise. I went from here to Kauai last year. It was fun despite the fact that I got sea-sick (the first time that's happened to me). I missed out this year.

Here's this years' schedule to give you an idea: http://www.privateerlynx.com/sail/calendar.html

Mineralogy was my downfall in geology - after struggling and flailing and only managing a C, I fled to the liberal arts and dead languages - and eventually maritime history. But in such a fascinating setting, you must get to use your geological know how quite a bit!

Once we know when we're going (May or August), I'll let you know! My mom sounds like she wants to stay strictly on Oahu, and though I'd love to get to Kauai most of all, I won't complain. But the Lynx sounds wonderful - so sorry you got sea sick!
